主に西洋社会で行われたこれまでの研究では、宗教的/スピリチュアル (R/S) な信念体系と科学支持的な信念体系はそれぞれ信者の幸福と正の相関関係にあるが、互いに非常に相容れないと認識されていることが示されている。この認識はおそらく、両方のシステムから十分に恩恵を受ける能力を損なうため、ここで検討する研究課題につながる。宗教と科学の相容れないと認識されていることは文化によって異なるのか、この相容れないレベル自体はグループ メンバーの幸福と関係があるのだろうか。私たちのデータ セットには、分析目的で 13 の世界の地域と 11 の信念グループに編成された 54 か国からの 55,230 人の参加者が含まれている。R/S と科学支持的な信念の相容れないと認識されていることは確かに西洋の特徴ではあるが、異文化間では標準ではないことがわかった。また、信念体系の相容れレベルが高いほど幸福と正の相関関係があり、特に幸福と各タイプの信念体系との正の関連の強さと相関していることもわかった。つまり、適合性が高いと認識された地域や信念グループでは、幸福と R/S および科学支持の信念との肯定的な関係も両方とも高かった。適合性がこれらの関係に及ぼす潜在的な因果効果について推測し、適合性が高まるにつれて、一方のシステムの利益を放棄することなくもう一方のシステムの利益を享受できる可能性も高まることに留意する。
